“This idea that a book and the words inside it, what we read and what we tell are capable of transforming us, is something I’ve always been passionate about. I’m interested in looking for similar situations that I see today – in my own existence – and I feel that, somehow, they have the same strength and ability to speak to us.”
João Garcia Miguel
That’s what really happened, it is said. In 1840, in the aftermath of the Portuguese Civil War, a young man arrived in a Douro village and brought with him a book full of stories. Following the teachings of this book, the people of Granja do Tedo founded a social and religious movement that would last seven years, led by the healer Maria das Neves, who called herself “Third Eve, by Jesus Crowned”. Based on a true story, Amândio Anastácio and João Garcia Miguel explore the origin of this enchantment and this human ability to talk to the gods within us, to make them narrators and to let them lead our lives in the most adverse and unusual situations. This play talks about courage, about setting out in search of voices greater than ourselves and the beauty of that transformation. It also talks about the power of a book to transform an entire community. At a time of radical social movements such as those throughout northern Europe, this is a circumscribed story, which gives us the freedom to make up our own minds and explore the echoes that certain events from the past still have in our daily lives.
